Celebrate the Santos Populares with Tradition, Music, and Marches!
As a community publication, Tomorrow magazine is always thrilled to share the most exciting events happening in our local area. This week, we encourage you to join the festivities as the Popular Saints (Santos Populares) make their highly anticipated return to the heart of Lagos.
From June 11th to 13th, the city will be brimming with a festive atmosphere and incredible community spirit. Hosted by the municipality, the beautiful Praça do Infante will be completely transformed into a massive open-air party (arraial). You can look forward to traditional food stalls (tasquinhas), lively musical entertainment, and spectacular parades.
This year’s celebration is centred around the theme: “Lagos – Entre Tradições e o Mar Multicultural” (Lagos – Between Traditions and the Multicultural Sea). It serves as a tribute to the identity of Lagos, honouring its historical roots and its centuries-old connection to the ocean.
What to Expect at the Festival
The festivities kick off each day at 18:00 with a vibrant parade of marches winding through the Historic Centre. The celebrations will feature both local groups and guest marches travelling from various parts of the Algarve and the rest of the country.
Beyond the marches, the packed program includes fantastic music and dance performances. You will be treated to shows by local favourites like the Sociedade Filarmónica Lacobrigense 1.º de Maio, the Rancho Folclórico e Etnográfico de Odiáxere, the Orquestra Ligeira de Lagos, and the Academia de Ballet Dança & Arte Sofia Rodrigues. To end the evening on a high note, you can dance the night away at traditional bailes featuring music by Humberto Silva, Cláudio Rosário & Ricardo Glória, and Filomena Baptista.
Plan Your Visit
Entry to the Lagos Popular Marches is free, making it the perfect opportunity for both residents and visitors to experience one of Portugal’s most iconic expressions of popular culture.
If you are planning to attend, please keep in mind that traffic will be restricted at Praça do Infante during the festival’s three days, between 20:00 and 23:30.
The June fun doesn’t stop in the city centre! Other localities in the municipality are also celebrating, including the Festa Popular de São João in Barão de São João from June 19th to 21st, and the Festejos de São Pedro in Bensafrim on June 28th.
